Music Conferences – Educational Opportunity or Giant Party?

Music Conferences – Educational Opportunity or Giant Party?

Music Conferences are an opportunity for a great time, but there's much more to the experience!

Music Conferences are an opportunity for a great time, but there’s much more to the experience!

As we approach the fall music conference season, it is probably a good idea to step back and examine how artists are using or squandering these opportunities.

Music Conferences are Opportunities for a good time

Let’s face it, any time a group of artists gets together it is bound to be a fun time. Add in free food and drinks and things can get a bit silly. To a point that is great. Really. Artists deserve a break to hang out with friends whom they may not see all that often and have a good time. Heck, those of us on the industry side deserve it too. The rub is that the partying can’t get in the way of the REAL purposes of these events.

Music Conferences are Opportunities for Knowledge

You can learn a lot about this crazy business by reading books (Music Business for Dummies, for example) and online resources (this blog), but there’s nothing better than hearing directly from the people in the business every day and having the opportunity to ask questions about what you hear. Conferences bring together industry professionals for the purpose of having them share their knowledge with artists. You get to hear their tips, tricks, and insights in an unfiltered setting. Many conferences even offer the opportunity to mentor with these professionals in one-on-one settings. That face time alone can be well worth a submission fee or badge purchase.

Music Conferences are Opportunities for your Business

Speaking of face time, many of the best deals are made either face to face, or at the very least because of a previous personal interaction. Conferences give you unique access to industry professionals who otherwise might be hidden behind a few layers of defenses. Keep the partying to a respectable level, and you can spend quality time with these folks letting them get to know you on both a professional and (more importantly) a personal level. From there you might be surprised what doors can open for you. Instead of you constantly chasing opportunities, they might start to seek YOU out.

Those personal connections (and inside jokes) can open doors for you. Take advantage of ALL of the opportunities available.
