Take your share of the public performance royalties

I get extremely frustrated when I hear artists complaining that the PROs are trying to kill live music by enforcing the legal requirement that a business that uses music obtain a Public Performance license.

It’s YOUR Money

Any business that uses any music, live or recorded, is required to have these public performance licenses in place. Period. The funds collected from these licenses go into the pool that is divided among all songwriters whose music is performed in the businesses. If you are a songwriter performing YOUR music in a licensed venue, that means YOU are entitled to a share of this money. With the new performance reporting tools that each PRO makes available, there is no excuse to letting your money go unclaimed!

It’s Easy

In the past it was rare for smaller, local songwriters to see much if anything from the PROs from live performances. Not so anymore. Thanks to the performance reporting systems that each PRO has put in place, more of the money is being more accurately distributed to the “little guys.” As a writer you are already affiliated with one of the PROs (if not, we’ve got to talk). After each show all you need to do is log into your online account, look for the link for ASCAP OnStage, BMILive, or SESAC Live Performance Reporting. Once there enter your set list and the venue location. Simple. You’ll see your payments as part of your regular distributions. This should be an every show routine, no different from reloading your merch and updating your mailing lists.

It Gives You The Most Buck for the Bang

Of course the more you’re playing, the more you’ll see. I’ve talked to artists who play 4 or 5 nights a week who have told me that their quarterly distributions shot up from pennies to hundreds of dollars just from adding in their live performances. Maybe it won’t be enough to retire on, but it sure will help pay some bills or put gas in the van for the next tour. Keep adding up the little bits here and there and lo and behold, you’re making a living from your artistry. The money is there waiting to be claimed, don’t miss out on your share.
